Welcoming the nation’s chief justice and other government officials into his room at the Kirkwood House hotel in Washington, D.C., Johnson took the oath of office, becoming the 17th President of the United States at 10:00 that same morning. “Gentlemen,” he remarked, “I shall lean upon you; I feel that I shall need your support[.] I am deeply impressed with the solemnity of the occasion and the responsibility of the duties of the office I am assuming.” President Johnson retained the existing cabinet members and set to work on reconstruction.
